First tree in the ground

Almost 50 years ago we had some trees planted in our school grounds as part of an initiative to plant more trees across the country. It was called Plant a Tree in '73! Mrs Sooley was a teaching assistant at Calverley CE Primary in 1973 and she helped to plant some of those trees.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the trees being planted we invited Mrs Christine Sooley back to school where she will be helping us to plant some more trees. This tree planting event launched our ambitious Green Team work to make the most of our incredible outdoor space in school.

On Thursday 10th November each class sent their school council member along with some other class representatives to plant some young saplings. With Mr Harkins Snr, Mrs Chamberlain, Miss Price and Mrs Sooley's help the children planted 22 trees. They planted 3 varieties; Silver Birch, Rowan and Scott Pine trees.

Then, as a staff, we planted 1 staff oak tree, taking the total number of trees up to 23, ready for 2023.

You can see the fun and effort that went into this terrific event in our photos.

We would like to make a special mention to Clive and Adam from the local business, Palmers Plants, who kindly donate their time to prepare the sits by digging the holes ready for the trees to be put in. Thank You!
