About Finch (Year 3)

Welcome to Year 3 Finch Class

Spring Term:

In Maths, we will be revisiting our prior knowledge of number and place value based around volume, capacity, mass and money. We will then progress into formal methods of addition and subtraction. There will be a focus on multiplication facts throughout this year, so it would be really helpful if the children could practise these at home to support them with their rapid recall. This term we are focusing on the three and four times tables in class. In English we will be starting our poetry unit on Kennings and we will learn how to write our own. Later on in the term, we will also look at traditional tales like Rumplestiltskin.

In French, we will learn how to name different important objects and items in the classroom.

In Science our topic will be Forces and Magnets. We will explore which materials are magnetic and identify the strength of magnets by carrying out various different scientific investigations. We will also learn that a force (a push, a pull or twist) is needed to make something start moving. A force is a process that causes a change in an objects shape, speed or direction.  This means that we usually see the effect of a force rather than the force itself. We will also do an investigation to investigate the effects of friction on different surfaces.

In Art, we will be looking at specific skills needed when studying art. We will learn that an artist creates tone by adding darker or lighter colours to the original colour and that the simplest way of creating tones of a colour is by adding black or white to the colour. We will complete a task in our sketchbooks to demonstrate our knowledge and confidence in this.

In Computing we will be learning about E-mailing. We will learn how to log in and out of an email, how to send a simple email, how to type an email address in correctly and send, how to add an attachment, how to write an email using positive language with an awareness of how it will make the recipient feel, recognise unkind behaviour online and know how to report it, offer advice to victims of cyberbullying and recognise when an email may be fake and explain how they know.

In PSHE we will be learning about mental health and well-being and later on in the term we will be looking at identity, society and inequality.

In R.E we will be considering the deeper meanings of religious festivals, where will will look at religious festivals such as EID and Diwali. Later on in the term we will focus on the topic of, "Why do Christians call the day Jesus died, Good Friday?".
