About Busy Bees (Year 1)

Welcome to Year One Busy Bees!

Autumn 2

In English we will share a variety of story books with the children to help them learn about sequencing events using time connectives. We will also learn to write in first person narrative, use adjectives in wanted posters and write ‘How to’ guides.

In Maths the children will continue our learning of addition and subtraction within 10 mainly focusing on subtraction. Then the children will focus on shape. They will recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes and begin to sort them by a given criteria. They will also use shape to look at repeating patterns. We will end by focusing on place value within 20. This will involve writing numbers to 20, understanding the value of numbers using tens and ones and counting one more and one less. They will also compare and order amounts in a variety of contexts.

This half term our learning in Science is Seasonal Changes (Autumn and Winter). We will learn about the four seasons with a particular focus on Autumn and Winter. The children will learn what the word weather means and how different types of weather can be measured. We will observe changes across the seasons by exploring the signs of Autumn and Winter through nature and wildlife.

Our History learning will have a focus on Neil Armstrong as a significant explorer. We will begin our learning with Space travel to the moon including Albert the Monkey(s) and Laika the Dog. This will then lead on to learning about the race to the moon and the part that Neil Armstrong played in that race.

Our Art sessions will be focused on exploring colour mixing, through paint play. We will do this by using a range of tools to paint on different surfaces and create paintings inspired by Clarice Cliff and Jasper Johns.

In Design Technology (DT) we will explore slider mechanisms and the movement they make. We will design, make and evaluate a moving picture based on our learning of Space.

In Computing we will develop keyboard and mouse skills through designing, building and testing individual rockets. We will do this by creating a digital list of materials using drawing software and recording data.

Our RE focus is ‘Why does Christmas Matter to Christians?’. The children will learn the story of Jesus’ birth and why Jesus is important to Christians. We will discuss ways in which Christians use the story of the Nativity to guide their beliefs and actions at Christmas.
