Reception - This week, the children in Reception have enjoyed a woodland walk in Calverley woods.  We looked at how the woods had changed with the seasons since our last walk in Autumn, and discussed what we could see and hear around us.  This time the children were challenged to find 10 natural objects and collect them in an egg box, as we have been learning all about the number 10.  We thought about how we might arrange our objects in our egg boxes as each one had only 6 compartments, and realised that there were many different ways to do this.  On coming back to school, we used some of the natural items such as leaves and sticks to create woodland crowns, by sticking them onto a card headband.  We remembered to carefully count out 10 decorations in total onto our crowns.

As an additional part of our number 10-based learning, we enjoyed sharing the story ‘Ten Black Dots’ and creating our own dotty pictures using 10 black stickers.  We had to think about what picture we might draw that we could add 10 black dots to, and how we might arrange those dots, for example 10 balloons in the sky.  What a super week of learning, Reception!

Year 1
Year 1

Year 1 listened to the story ‘Town mouse, Country mouse’ which introduced the differences between living in a town and living in the countryside. We followed this on by learning about where we live. The children have learnt the meaning of a village, City, Country and Continent. They have really enjoyed listening to the song ‘seven continents’ to help them learn the names. Perhaps they could sing this to you at home? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE

We have learnt about the capital cities of the countries in the UK and followed travelling Ted on his tour of London. We saw many famous landmarks such as Big Ben, Tower bridge and Buckingham Palace to name a few. The children chose one of the landmarks and drew them in detail.

Year 2 have been working ever so hard this week taking our SATs quizzes.  Throughout the week we have all concentrated ever so hard and our teachers have said that they are all really proud of us.  We have shown off our maths skills, our reading skills and our writing skills.  We are looking forward to nice weekend!

Murton Park

In Year 3, we have recently been on a visit to Murton Park in York as part of our current History learning on the Romans. The children started the day by re-visiting what they had previously learnt about the Stone Age and they visited an Iron Age village. We then moved on to spend the rest of the day at a Roman fort and they learnt about life as Roman soldiers. The centurion showed us to our barracks and we got to wear Roman tunics. As part of our day, we took part in some exciting activities including making some clay oil lamps and learning how to write using Roman writing.  We also had some weapons training on using shields and spears. We ended our day by learning about how the Romans used a tortoise formation to march together and we had to work as a team to stop the Celts from invading! The children had a great day and they were able to apply so much of their learning from their day with our work in class.

Year 4
Year 4a

On Thursday Year 4 spent an enthralling afternoon exploring the history of St. Wilfred’s church. They dressed as Lords and Ladies from the past and set about on a fact finding mission to uncover secrets about the building’s heritage. The children made plaques and shields to represent their own family and interests.

Year 5a

Year 5 have been super creative and have made their own pop-up books! There have been stories of rockets going to the moon and a sad tale of a poor slug who thinks he's a snail without a shell! The children have made pivot mechanisms, slide mechanisms and 3D pop ups! It has been challenging making the books, but well worth the endeavours!

Year 6

Last week, Year 6 completed their SATs assessments.  We were really impressed with how calmly and maturely all of the children approached their tests and at the end of the week they enjoyed a very well-deserved cupcake treat! Very well done to all of our Year 6 pupils- you should all be extremely proud of the hard work and effort that you have put in over the last few months.
