Snow Reception

At the end of last week we said goodbye to Miss Ashrif, who has been supporting our class as a teaching student over the last term.  Thank you for all of your help with continuing our learning Miss Ashrif, we will miss you!  As well as investigating the numbers 7 and 8 in Maths, writing about people who are special to us and preparing for our family celebration assembly, we also enjoyed a morning of playing in the snow. What fun everyone had with throwing snowballs and playing games together!

Year 1 wanted
Year 1

Year 1 - This week year one children have been busy designing and making vehicles.  We have learnt what makes wheels turn and how they are attached to a chassis.  We also looked at some vehicles that would not move and identified the problem and fixed them.  Afterwards we designed and labelled our own vehicle making sure it had all the components needed to make the wheels of our vehicle turn.  I am sure you will agree that our finished product is fantastic.

In English we have been reading the story of Cops and Robbers by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.  We learned that one of the characters called Grandma Swag, is on the loose in Calverley.  We have made wanted posters to make everyone aware of what she looks like.  We ask that you keep an eye out for her and if you see her to ring the police right away!

Mary Anning

Year 2 have been learning about significant individuals from History this week and we have focussed on the famous fossil hunter, Mary Anning. We learnt about Mary’s childhood and what led her to spend her days searching for ‘curiosities’ along the beach in Lyme Regis. We then completed a fact file about her life and used pencil and watercolours to create our own ammonite fossil artwork. We have also made some fantastic ferris wheels in Design Technology using a wheel and axle to allow the wheels to rotate. It certainly wasn’t easy at times but we persevered and problem solved and they turned out to be super structures!

Year 3

In Year 3, we have had a busy few weeks! In Design Technology, we have been learning all about static electricity. We started our unit of learning by exploring how this can be used to make objects move. We had to generate static electricity by carrying out a range of different experiments. One of these was called ‘Drinks can race’. We had to charge some balloons using a duster and then use the static charge to try and get the cans to move across the table! We had great success with this and we worked out how to make the cans move faster. Following this, we then used our knowledge to start designing our own electrostatic games! We worked very carefully to develop our design briefs and to create some excellent games. We showed great team work throughout the process of making our games and we are really proud of our final results!

Congratulations to our Y6 dodgeball team who came first in a local tournament against other schools in Pudsey. Winning all their matches and having lots of fun with various additional rules, our team set a great example for our school and should be incredibly proud of their achievements and how they worked together as a team.
