Reception have been enjoying football coaching sessions with Brad from Leeds Rhinos. They have been learning to shoot, pass and dribble with the ball.

We have been preparing for our Father’s Day event on Friday too when we will be having games and treats in the sunshine with our family.

This half term we have started to learn facts about minibeasts and we have opened a Minibeast café which serves beetle biscuits, cockroach juice, butterfly soup and spider toffee apples! Yum yum!

Year 1 began the half term with a Science focus on the seasons Spring and Summer. We discussed the changes we have seen from Autumn through to Spring and Summer. One of these changes was the temperature becoming warmer. The weather has certainly listened to our learning as this week the sun has definitely had his hat on! We enjoyed learning songs about the summer, this is one our favourites…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSLBTCpXmio

In Geography we have been discussing our experiences of the Seaside, naming some features and comparing Seaside holidays then and now. To help us think about what we do at the seaside we read the story of ‘Lucy and Tom at the seaside’ by Shirley Hughes.

Next week we are looking forward to continuing our Science learning with our Seasons workshop. Fingers crossed the sun is still shining for us!

Friction

Year 5 have been SCIENTISITS this week! They have been learning about forces and have carried out friction investigations and air resistance investigations.  They have explored how objects slow down because of friction – How does the surface affect how far an object will travel? They tested different surfaces to find out which causes the most and least friction. They have also investigated air resistance – How does the size of the parachute affect the time it takes to fall? The children created questions to investigate; decided which variable changed in the investigation; identified what they would measure and drew their own conclusions from the results they collected.

Year 6 were very lucky to have a skateboarding workshop with LS-TEN this week on our school playground. It was lovely to see children building in confidence riding the boards, hearing the shrieks of delight as they mastered a new skill and see their smiley faces at the end of the session! The children had opportunities to learn how to turn, do some simple tricks and even use the hills in the playground to gather up some speed. Mrs Pickard and Mrs Kirk were so impressed with their resilience and perseverance and the staff from LS-TEN spoke highly about the children’s lovely manner and fantastic attitude – well done, Year 6!

Coffee morning

Year 6 Coffee Morning

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the Y6 coffee morning that was held today. It was fantastic to see so many of you there enjoying all the great activities and cakes! We loved seeing all of you there to help raise money for some Y6 activities being planned for in a few weeks’ time. Many thanks again to everyone who came and our great Y6 students for helping out!

The raffle has also been drawn and prizes allocated. Thank you for your support with this too!

Before the holidays, 6 girls in Y5/6 took part in a competitive football tournament against other local schools. Immediately under pressure (due to playing with 1 less than their opposition and having no recognized goalkeeper) the girls did remarkably well to top their group undefeated and with three clean sheets, they progressed to the semi-final where they were once again victorious. Unfortunately, in the final, they conceded their first goal of the competition and were unable to find an equalizer in the short amount of game time and limited possession. All of the girls who took part showed enormous courage, skill and teamwork to play so brilliantly together and almost pull off a sensational result. Well done to all involved.

As part of our partnership with the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, we are once again working with Leeds Rhinos Rugby League club to offer tickets to children and adults in school. These tickets would be for the match on Friday 14th July. Kick-off is at 8pm vs Hull KR, with the match taking place at Headingley Stadium. Adult tickets are £10, with child tickets priced at £5. The closing date for ticket orders will be Tuesday 4th June. After the deadline, tickets would then be dropped off at school on the afternoon of Tuesday 11th July 2023. Parents can then collect them from school after school that day. If you are interested in buying, please look for the link on our school gateways app.
