Dear Parents,

Welcome to first newsletter of 2023.  I hope you feel that the children have settled back in well to the new term.  Please see below just some of activities and learning that the children have been involved in over the first few weeks back.

We noticed that some of the weather forecasts are showing snow early next week.  Others not.  In order to be fully prepared, we are re-issuing today usernames and passwords for Microsoft Teams for children in Year 2 upwards.  Please keep these safe as work will be set by teachers if at any stage during the winter, we close due to snow, or other emergencies, for those year groups.

Children in Year 1 will have work set via a link on the School's website and children in Reception can access work on Tapestry should school ever close.  Hopefully, this will all be unnecessary, but best to be prepared!

I also wanted to let you know that Miss O'Hara has decided she will be leaving Calverley when we break-up for the Easter Holidays.  You may be aware that Miss O'Hara has given many years service to the Calverley Community and supported many, many children and families during her time at school.  We will all be sad to see her move on in April but sincerely thank her for all she has contributed to help make Calverley the successful school that it is.  I am sure you will all wish her well.

Rec dinosaur

Reception have had superb start to the new term. They have wowing the grownups in their new phonics groups all week. We have been reading a book called If the Dinosaurs Came Back and writing about the jobs the dinosaurs could help us with. We have been using shapes to create a dinosaur and naming the shapes we have used. We have been revising our numbers to five and number bonds. The children have been sharing their holiday news and sharing photos in class from Tapestry. Well done Boogie Bugs on a brilliant start to your second term in school.

Year 5 have been exploring the big question, “What would Jesus do?” They have examined Jesus’s Sermon on The Mount and thought about the lessons Jesus wanted to teach us! Be humble, treat each other as we would like to be treated, show forgiveness – were all some of the messages the children understood from the Bible text. Year 5 will be exploring the big question further when they look at the story of the two builders and the Roman Centurian.

Leeds Utd Year 6
Leeds Utd Year 6a

Year 6 had a very exciting day on Monday when the BBC, along with LUFC, visited our school to film Match of the Day!  Children in Y6CK took part in a Positive Choices workshop and were joined by first team player and Italian international, Wilfried Gnonto, who took part in some games with the class and also a question and answer session. The day finished with group photos with both Y6CK and Y6RP, with all of the children also receiving signed photos from Gnonto and Aaranson as well.  It was a really fantastic experience for the children and we are all looking forward to watching Match of the Day when it airs on Sunday 22nd January.

Sports
Sports

Earlier this week, 24 children in Year 5 and 6 attended a Sports Hall Athletics event at Leeds Trinity University with other schools from West Leeds. The children did phenomenally well across all track and field events, winning many of them and never finishing outside of a medal position. After all the scores had been added up, Calverley had finished in first place meaning we will be heading to John Charles Centre for Sport after half-term for the semi-finals, facing other winning schools from across Leeds. Mr Harkins, Mrs Emmott and Miss Hall accompanied the children and they were all super impressed by the determination and athleticism shown by all the students. Well done to everyone involved, and bring on the next round!

Safeguarding Update

Co-op Academy Priesthorpe has opened a Community Fridge with the support of the Co-op and environmental charity, Hubbub. A Community Fridge is a space for the local community to come together and share food resources. The community can bring surplus food that might otherwise have gone to waste.

Community Fridge

Community Fridges help address social isolation and provide locals with access to fresh food, whilst saving money. It’s a great solution to help eliminate food waste from supermarkets or kitchen cupboards and redistribute this to local families.

The Community Fridge based at Co-op Priesthorpe Academy is open every day in term time from 11.20am to 12.50pm. Please click on this link if you would like any further information and to see if there is a fridge near you https://www.communityfridgemap.org.uk
