Allowing all to flourish; enabling heart, mind and spirit to soar. “I can do all this through Christ who gives me strength.”

Welcome to another exciting year ahead at Calverley CE Primary School. It's been a real pleasure seeing the children come back into school and starting the school year in such a positive and energetic way.  All the staff are thrilled at seeing their classes once again ready to work together ready to LOVE, LEARN AND CARE.

Year 5 Children Know Where They’re Going!

Year 5 children have begun the year studying a Geography topic – Navigation! They have learnt the continents of the world, oceans of the world, compass directions and about longitude and latitude. They may even surprise you with being able to identify the Prime Meridian!  No more getting lost on excursions, no more need for the SAT NAV – if you’ve a child in Y5 they will get you to where you want to go!

Year 6

Year 6 – 6RP and 6CK

The Front Line – Year 6

Year 6 have had a fantastic start to the year and have begun their new topic, The Front Line in WWII. A highlight of the topic so far is reading Once by Morris Gleitzman – the children are on the edge of their seats after each gripping chapter telling the story of Felix on his quest to find his parents.

We are looking forward to our visit in October from Yorkshire author, Tom Palmer. Tom Palmer will be coming to share his new book, Resist. We will be learning about how the author planned, researched and wrote his latest novel. Resist shines a light on the incredible

Year 2 have been reading the story ‘The Bear and the Piano’ in English. To help us write a setting description using exciting adjectives we went on a walk through Calverley woods using our sense of sight, touch and smell to generate some super noun phrases to use in our sentences. We heard geese and pigeons, felt tree bark and moss and saw beautiful trees, flowers and berries.   work of the WWll Dutch resistance, in a story inspired by the childhood of Hollywood legend Audrey Hepburn.

Reception Elmer

Reception - All the children have had a wonderful start to school. They have been learning all about the new rules and routines and we are getting to know all our Boogie Bug friends a little better. We have been reading Elmer and talking about what makes us different and what makes us all special. We are even having a little visit this Friday in class from Elmer the elephant! We are also looking at seasonal changes in nature as Autumn begins. We have been exploring conkers and talking about how the trees change in Autumn too.

In Year 3, we have started our first Science topic of the year by learning all about Rocks! To begin with, we used magnifying glasses to help us make close observations of a selection of different rocks including: chalk, granite, pumice & sandstone. We worked hard to think about how we could describe their properties using scientific vocabulary. Our next challenge was to consider how we could classify the rocks using a branching key. We had to think carefully about examples of questions we could use that would enable us to sort the rocks based on their appearance and properties. After this, we completed our first practical investigation which involved exploring what changes might occur to rocks when they are in water. Our findings were very interesting and made us think carefully about which type of rock would be best to build a statue with and why.

Year 1 have been learning all about the 5 senses. We explored our sense of hearing by going on a ‘sound walk’ around school. Then used our sense of taste to identify sweet, sour, salty and bitter tastes. The sour taste made our tongues tingle! We also carried out a test using our sense of smell to identify what was in the pots. We didn’t like the smell of garlic!!

We have enjoyed reading familiar stories such as ‘Five minutes peace’ and ‘A squash and a squeeze’. We have talked about how a characters emotions change throughout a story.

Thank You for helping the children to research about your lives as a child. We have enjoyed sharing the photographs you sent to help us identify differences between your childhood and the children’s.

Mini beasts

Year 4 have been busy sorting and classifying minibeasts during their science lessons. After practising with leaves and liquorice allsorts, we were ready for the real thing on Wednesday afternoon.

Taking advantage our new woodland enclosure, we lifted stones, tilted logs and sifted through leaves. Worms, snails, millipedes and spiders were among the creatures we discovered. Mr. Hallas joined us as we discussed how to classify and each one.

To complement our work on habitats, we have been reading "The Eye of the Wolf" by Daniel Pennac. The main characters struggle for survival in some of the world's most extreme habitats; Desert, Rainforest and Tundra.

School parking

Parking

We understand that parking around school at drop off and pick up is difficult due to the nature of the roads around school.

Please can we try to park respectfully and not block any entrances or park anywhere which could prevent access in the event of an emergency.  The safety of children is paramount,
