Maths

During the Summer term, much of our focus will lie with revisiting facts and skills learnt during the year so far and applying these to reasoning and word problems. We will begin the half term with a short unit on place value, before moving onto division and multiplication and finally looking at subtraction and addition. Many of our calculations will involve using and converting different units of measure, such as metric measures of distance (mm, cm, m, km) and money.

English

This half term we will read the non-fiction book "Humans" which will take us on a whistle-stop tour of ancient civilisations. We will look at the structure and style of information texts and learn fascinating facts about Ancient Egyptians, Mayans and Nubians. In writing we will practise verb tenses and punctuation. With the help of a time-machine, we we write a letter blending styles, so that our friend received a letter that was both chatty and informative.

We will also read "The Firework Maker's Daughter" by Phillip Pullman, working together on a collection of tasks that analyse his writing style. while honing our own inference skills.

Religious Education

Following on chronologically from our last unit about Easter, this half term we will explore the key question 'When Jesus left, what next?' Pupils will learn about the events leading up to Pentecost and developing an understanding of the important links to the concept of Kingdom of God. To support this, we will explore art work depicting Pentecost by historic and contemporary artists, as well as reading relevant passages from the book of Acts.

Topic

In Geography we will use maps to help analyse the way that land is used in Calverley. During our History topic about Ancient Egypt, pupils will learn about how and why this civilisation prospered by considering looking at different artefacts. In computing, pupils will be introduced to html and css coding by analysing web pages, before learning to make changes by modifying existing code. As part of our whole school Jubilee project, Year 4 will be learning about what life was like in the 1970s.
