Intent

Grammatical knowledge and writing fundamentals are taught in a cycle of engagement, modelling, practice and review.

The sessions in English could contain the following elements:

Engaging opener/Warm up – focus on a particular skill drawn from the text being studied (could be a grammar, spelling, punctuation, language skill). Warm up activities can be tasks adapted from some of the Phase Toolkit ideas and could also be an opportunity for test question practice (see test question practice section).

Shared writing/Modelled writing – where the shared text is used as a model text to magpie ideas from – creating sentences with a focus on a particular skill (see Phase 3 sentence ideas)

Independent task – depending on the session – this could be a writing or guided reading task

Plenary – Review children’s learning, end with a mini assessment task based on the outcome, add shared learning to the working wall or washing line; view children’s work under a visualizer or use iPad to display children’s work on interactive screen for analysis.
