Humility

“As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.” - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Many people have the wrong idea about God, the Bible and humility, or being humble. They think being humble means grovelling in front of others or thinking they are no good and others are better. That’s not what the Bible says. God says when you are humble, you are free from pride and arrogance. You know that in your flesh you are inadequate, yet you also know who you are in Christ.

Pupils will explore the theme in some of these ways:

  • Discuss the three quotes provided in the display materials for this value
  • Listen to the story of The Tower of Babel which tells of the importance of not trying to overreach ourselves.
  • Jesus as ‘The Servant King’ models how God expects us to act humbly: The parable of Jesus and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14) also highlights the dangers of being righteous:
  • When children reflect on their achievements, it is important they avoid always comparing themselves to their peers. “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” - Ernest Hemingway
  • Lent, a humble time for Christians, begins during half term on Wednesday 14th What are children planning on giving up?

PSHE Links – Dreams and Goals

It is important that we have dreams and goals but these we should not forget our place in God’s world when forming them.  Celebrating achievements should be free from arrogance.
