Engagement in Learning Outcomes (children’s engagement in their own learning)

Engagement in learning is:

Description

fully developed

The child:

  • is highly curious;
  • finds things out and shares what has been found with the teacher and other pupils;
  • demonstrates an appetite for new learning and is equipped to pursue their own enquiries;
  • shows resilience and perseverance when approaching something new or dealing with their own mistakes.

developing well

The child:

  • is curious;
  • asks many questions of others but not yet feeling they can find it out for themselves;
  • demonstrates an interest in new learning and is beginning to learn how to pursue their own enquiries;
  • uses the learning environment to support learning without being prompted – working walls, tip slips, etc.;
  • will use their peers for support.

continuing to develop

The child:

  • is eager to meet directed expectations but is not yet asking their own questions;
  • is keen to please but would rather complete tasks that require little independent thought – will sometimes

stop with the first answer;

  • demonstrates an interest in new learning but is not yet driven to extend their own thinking.

beginning to develop

The child:

  • is compliant and passive in lessons;
  • prefers routine tasks and produces work of a minimum acceptability;
  • demonstrates some interest in new learning but prefers easy success - will usually stop with the first answer.

not yet developed

The child:

  • demonstrates a disinterest in school life and work;
  • finds it difficult to put in more effort than the minimum;
  • is disengaged with tasks and appears to see no purpose to their work;
  • feels reluctant to seek advice and help (possibly due to embarrassment…) or has no desire to seek

advice and help;

  • does not understand their work so becomes disheartened easily;
  • has kept trying with their work in the past but has experienced failure so has learned to give up;
  • Uses procrastination in order to avoid independent classroom activities i.e. asking to go to the toilet,

sharpening their pencil for a long time, etc.
