Reception have been busy preparing for our Family Class Assembly next week. We have been reading ‘Love Makes a Family’ and ‘Love you to the moon and back’ as stimulus to talk about our loved ones. We have planned some special treats to give out at the assembly and been working hard all week to make these. We have also met Numberblock 6 and have been solving addition and subtraction problems which have been helping us learn the number bonds to 6. We have been enjoying playing board games with friends using dice too at school and home. The children have been really enjoying the castle role play area and dressing up as knights, dragons and royalty.  Whilst playing outside a mysterious spell has befallen reception that makes the children fall asleep for 100 years – fortunately the Boogie Bugs have been mixing their own potions to cure the sleeping spell! Phew! What a busy and exciting week it has been.

Year 3OB
Y3OB

Year 3 have been taking part in Design unit about electrical systems. They were challenge to create a public information display to that would appear in a Stone Age display at a museum. They considered the qualities their poster required to meet the needs of users. Pupils created these fantastic posters and used batteries, battery holders, crocodile clips and bulbs to create to add an extra dimension.

4HA DT 2

This week 4HA made their own slingshot cars in D.T. They had a fabulous time making their cars and we were really impressed by their enthusiasm and creativity. They each used their imagination to think of a creative design and used problem solving skills when things didn’t go quite as they hoped! The end result was fantastic! Well done Red Kite Class!

VR 5

Years 4 and 5 enjoyed a Virtual Reality experience in school yesterday. The topics of the Ancient Egyptians and Space were brought to life via state of the art headsets. Four fascination workshops took place, enriching learning for 120 children. The cost was covered by The Friends of Calverley, so  a big thank you to Rachel Bromley and her team, as well as the wider school community who have supported fund raising efforts.

On Wednesday, Year 4 were lucky enough to have a visit from Martin Chappellow from the RNLI. Our PSHE theme this half term is Playing Safe and Martin, an RNLI volunteer, delivered a water safety talk to the children -  demonstrating ways to stay safe around water, help themselves if they get into difficulties and how to help others.

The interactive, educational talk was enjoyed by the Y4 classes (including the adults who also dressed up).

Many thanks to those Y4 parents and children who brought in a donation for the RNLI, which is funded completely through donations, if you would like to send a donation, and all amounts are very gratefully received, you still have time - any monies can be given to the office or to Mrs Haigh (also an RNLI volunteer) by Thursday 7th March. Thank you in anticipation, every little helps the very worthy cause.

5WO Design Technology Bridge Building

As part of our Design Technology topic currently, Y5 have been studying different structures used in bridge design such as the Beam bridge, Arch bridge and Truss bridges. This week we have had fun making Truss bridges from spaghetti and masking tape using strong triangular formations to add rigidity and stability. Everyone did a great job working in teams! The end results were impressive. 😊

WEST LEEDS ACTIVITY CENTRE

On Monday 26th Feb Y5 went on a trip to West Leeds Activity Centre where we had a focus on team building, cooperation and problem solving.

The children loved taking part in activities such as the night-line, team games, climbing, combat archery and the assault course.

We all learnt a lot about working together and looking out for our friends! Everyone returned to school thoroughly muddy but having had a great time!

Well done Y5 🙂

CALVERLEY COMMUNITY

Calverley Hall

We are asking local people to submit a design with the things that they would like to see in the new garden, so I wondered if you had a newsletter or notice board where you might be able to share with the school/parents if possible? It might also make a nice activity to do in class, and we would love to see some ideas from pupils at the school.

More detailed information about the garden and the template to use is on our website:

https://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/support-us/projects-and-appeals/appeal-launched-calverley-old-hall/garden-design-ideas/

If you would like to get involved, you can either post them to us at the address below:

The Landmark Trust,  Shottesbrooke, Maidenhead, Berkshire, SL6 3SW

or if you scan and email them back to us at [email protected]

The deadline for submissions is Friday 29th March, so hopefully it gives everyone time to get creative.
